The logistics of moving to another country accross the ocean

Since about 5 years I've been living on and off in Poland and Japan for a few months at a time.
Now the time has come to permanently move to Japan. But, at what cost? What issues will I have to quash in order to accomplish a successfull move? Read on.

What do I do about all the things in my Polish apartment?

See, over the years I've accumulated a lot of personal belongings. Large and small.

Most things I do not actively need, or things that are rather high in value can be put in storage. For example:

  • Tools
  • Furniture
  • Washing machine
  • Cooking oven
  • Any and all kitchen appliances
  • Cookware

However, things that would cause a more immediate problem would obviously be the following:

  • Computer
  • Monitors
  • TV
  • Consoles

I could probably live with putting my TV along with Hi-Fi in storage. Computer, monitor and consoles? Not so much.

Therefore I need to figure out a way to ship all of this stuff to Japan without breaking the bank or damaging it.

Mail/courier? Out of the question. Insanely expensive to ship anything over 5 kg.
Checked luggage? Could work for everything except the computer itself. Relatively cheap, each piece of luggage can be up to 23 kg depending on the airline.

The cost

I don't even want to think about it.

  • Plane tickets: $2000 + $800 for the cat
  • Extra luggage: $600
  • Getting all that luggage to the airport: $150
  • Getting all that luggage to the apartment in Japan: $250
  • First month of rent in Japan: $2000
  • Cash needed to live for a month: $1500

And the grand total is $7800 or 30 700 PLN. Fuck me.
